Some individuals experience allergic reactions upon ingestion of certain seafood such as shrimp, crab, or fish. Symptoms are attributed to a variety of immune system causes.

Seafood allergic reactions are caused primarily by specific proteins in the tissues of shellfish and fish. These same proteins may also provoke an exaggerated response from the immune system, which causes allergic reactions. A common protein called tropomyosin is often blamed as the main allergen culprit when it comes to seafood, coming from shrimp and crab.

Allergic reactions include symptoms that can be mild or serious: itching, eruption of skin rashes, swelling of the dermis, gastrointestinal problems such as nausea or diarrhea. More severe reactions may involve anaphylaxis-a potentially life-threatening condition that needs immediate medical intervention.

Further, the constitutional factors also significantly influence the individual's allergic predisposition. In this regard, individuals with a family history of food allergies are found to be at an increased risk of developing seafood allergy. Moreover, a few of these individuals eventually develop an allergy to sea foods during their later years of life despite having no problems when they consumed it previously.

Individuals, who suspect that they have seafood allergy, must consult a healthcare professional for proper diagnosis and management. The primary mode of treatment for food allergic disorders is avoidance of the offending foods.
