Seafood allergic reactions are caused primarily by specific proteins in the tissues of shellfish and fish. A common protein called tropomyosin is often blamed as the main allergen culprit when it comes to seafood, coming from shrimp and crab.

More severe reactions may involve anaphylaxis-a potentially life-threatening condition that needs immediate medical intervention.

Further, the constitutional factors also significantly influence the individual's allergic predisposition. In this regard, individuals with a family history of food allergies are found to be at an increased risk of developing seafood allergy. Moreover, a few of these individuals eventually develop an allergy to sea foods during their later years of life despite having no problems when they consumed it previously.
